Superman. Batman. Ironman. Treeman???

Ain't any superhero like Superman and Batman? Treeman, as they call him, is totally the one who is need of help as he suffers from an extremely rare disorder which is known as Epidermodysplasia verruciformis.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (also called Lewandowsky-Lutz dysplasia or Lutz-Lewandowsky epidermodysplasia verruciformis) is an extremely rare autosomal recessivegenetic hereditary skin disorder associated with a high risk of carcinoma of the skin. It is characterized by abnormal susceptibility to human papillomaviruses (HPVs) of the skin. The resulting uncontrolled HPV infections result in the growth of scaly macules and papules, particularly on the hands and feet. It is typically associated with HPV types 5 and 8, which are found in about 80% of the normal population as asymptomatic infections, although other types may also contribute.

Can a person become a tree? Meet Dede Koswara who came pretty close. He is one of the most extraordinary people in the world. When Dede was only fifteen years old, he received a small cut on his knee. Shortly afterwards he started growing bark like warts all over his body, eventually his hands and feet were overrun with root like appendages. Since then, Dede has been known as the Tree Man.

He is a native in Indonesia. He was a fisherman, but later on he joined the circus troupe, more of a freak show alongside with other people who has weird or odd conditions. Just like a mascot, he, somewhat, fashions and shows his disorder to everybody to entertain them. So, having such a disability could also help a person financially.

Fortunately, an American Dermatologist promised to help him, and perform several surgeries even just to try to cure his illness to prevent the warts from completely deliberating him. This disorder can be cancerous that’s why it needs immediate attention and intervention.

Is his essence as a person being affected? Apparently, he is a victim of abuse and ridicule. I really honor the courage that he has. If I was faced with the same affliction I might not have survived at all. I know that many people are disgusted at his sight and are making fun of him but once you place yourself in his position, you would be able to have some empathy for him and you would realize what a strong person he is. If you will be his nurse, will you be disgusted just like many people will? Please don’t. For everyone who has read this blog, please pray for Dede’s successful operations and fast recovery.

honestly, i will feel hesitant if i will be dede's nurse but as a nurse whose job is quite holistic.. i will try to give him the same quality care that i'm giving to every patients regardless of his physical condition. and with regard to his essence as a person, i think he will be affected only if he let other people dehumanize him. :)

I think I have also watched this story from the Discovery Channel if I am not mistaken.
I really feel sad to these types of individuals that are suffering with such conditions that are truly mysterious.
A good nurse should never be affected of what the disease or the type of patient he or she will handle but focus on planning the best ways he/she can do to help them.
